Aim & Scope

Frontiers in Built Environment publishes rigorously peer-reviewed research encompassing the engineering of buildings, sustainable cities and urban spaces. Field Chief Editor Izuru Takewaki at Kyoto University is supported by an outstanding Editorial Board of international experts. This multidisciplinary open-access journal is at the forefront of disseminating and communicating scientific knowledge and impactful discoveries to researchers, engineers, and the public worldwide. The modern society and cities are mostly vulnerable to extreme natural disasters caused by earthquakes, strong winds and other unexpected disturbances, and are also faced with global climate change issues. In order to overcome such unavoidable issues, smart methodologies for designing, protecting and upgrading built environments including infrastructures and buildings are strongly desired recently. However the perfect defense and protection may be difficult because of cost problems and unexpected phenomena of natural and man-made disasters. Under these circumstances, the concept of ‘Resilient Cities and Society’ plays an important role. The resilience is utilized in various fields including society, community and multidisciplinary engineering. It implies the ability or capability to recover from certain damaged states and maintain its function or the toughness for damage expected against various disturbances. The resilient cities and society may be realized by investigating the following critical issues. (1) Typological classification of cities by Digital Architecture and Urban Science: The cities with common types can jointly seek for common useful methods for constructing resilient society. (2) Promotion of Wind and Earthquake Engineering for damage-tolerant infrastructure and building systems (Bridge Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Hydrological Engineering, Transportation and Transit Systems.) (3) Smart use of green building and energy techniques (Sustainable Design and Construction, Smart Structural Materials and Indoor Environment): Low-carbon society enables the realization of more resilient society. (4) Structural and environmental health monitoring enhances the performance of early warning systems for disasters and damages which enables resilient society (Structural Sensing, Earthquake Engineering, Urban Science, Transportation and Transit Systems). (5) Computer simulation and data science open new worlds for innovation in constructing resilient and sustainable built environment (Computational Methods in Structural Engineering, Construction Management).
