Aim & Scope

The International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (IJWIL) publishes peer-reviewed original research and topical issues dealing with Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). In this Journal, WIL is defined as "an educational approach that uses relevant work-based experiences to allow students to integrate theory with the meaningful practice of work as an intentional component of the curriculum". Examples of practice include work placements, internships, practicum, cooperative education (Co-op), work-related projects/competitions, service learning, entrepreneurships, student-led enterprise, simulations (including virtual WIL), etc. WIL is related to, but not the same as, the fields of experiential learning, work-based learning, and vocational education and training. The journal began in the year 2000 under the name of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education. At that time in the Asia-Pacific region, there was an increasing practice of Cooperative Education, however, little in the way of relevant active and, in particular, published research. The aim of the journal was to encourage research activity with the Asia-Pacific region and provide a supportive mechanism for emerging researchers from the region to publish their research findings. Since then the journal authorship, readership, and editorship has grown well-beyond the Asia-Pacific region, including from Europe, North America, and the Middle East. The practice of Cooperative Education also diversified beyond what typically would be described as Cooperative Education. In response to this diversification, the term Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) gained popular use in the international literature. This term serves as a useful umbrella term that includes Cooperative Education as one form and also includes a variety of other practices that share commonality with Cooperative Education (e.g., internships, practicums, simulations, digital WIL, work-related projects, service learning). In recognition of these international shifts, in 2018 the journal changed its name to the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (IJWIL). [1]
